Hey Mark! While you are hanging out in here. Is there a chance that grey gateway, 3rd from the top of the thread, is from earlier than 1981? You might compare contents for some more clues. Someone might be more familiar what sets they mostly were included in. _________________

Yes, I'm sure it is earlier but there is no actual date listed. The Basic set for sale is the Holmes set, G and D series are the monos, Monster & Treasure are the individual sets, Knights of Camelot is a mock up with black box (similar to Divine Right) instead of the blue it got printed with.

If you could pick a best guess date, I think we should split it off and give it its own thread. We can put a question mark next to the best guess date. _________________

My guess would be it is 1979 since the Monster and Treasure compilation came out in 1980. If it was 1980, the compilation would probably be listed.
There is one more Gateway to Adventure catalog that I am aware of (but do not own). It has a black cover and seems to have shown up in some version of the Basic set. I have only ever seen 2 or 3 auctions with this.

I'm putting a guess around early 1980 as it shows Dragons #32-35 (March 80 release) and another I'm not sure of.
I think the Dragons are #32-35 and #27. I wonder how far in advance the issues are created? A March magazine would be available/shipped out at the end of February so it would be in the works in January (possibly earlier). So it is possible it could be a mock up if the cover art was ready.
For the 1979 side, there is also no mention of the Fiend Folio which was scheduled for release in 1979 but then got pushed back. There is also no mention of B2 (Dec 1979) or Geomorphs 1-3 compilation (1980).

hmmm. I don't think they would do mockups of Dragon magazine during that period in time. Most of those issues were by the seat of their pants, from what I have gathered over time. Nothing definitive though. _________________
