Posted: Mon Apr 21, 2008 3:34 am Post subject: Research Forums -- Fanzines
I finished filling out all of the unique names for magazine titles from the Archive side of the site to the Research forums side of the site. There are hundreds of titles in there. Sorry I did not make entries for ANY of them! Check back in 20 years to see how much they have fleshed out!!
I'd like to acknowledge Brian Misiaszek for generously offering his compiled list in a combined effort with my own. With that said, it hardly a complete list. I am guessing maybe 70% complete? There may be quite a few entries that are incorrect or don't really belong as rpg zines. Time will help suss this out along with the watchful effort and expertise of visitors and tome crew.
I am making this thread a sticky, but it is open to comments, suggestions, corrections, and ADDITIONS to this list. If you need something added, by all means let us know and an administrator will add it as soon as we get around to it.
____________
*EDIT
Gentlemen, Thanks for the work of many, many dedicated people both here (particularly Brette, Brian M., David and Kynan) and abroad on the newgroup etc.; I am pleased to offer up what could be considered a definite list. I think it would be great to edit it here continually and I will get to work on cooking up the list comparably on both the research forums and archive side of the site. Let me know if there are any errors or additions.
Items highlighted in bold script with hyperlink, are items with content currently in the research forum. All the rest, are an empty slate waiting for images and info.
____________
*EDIT
All items in this list fall under the classification of zine as something that was produced periodically as a magazine or newsletter. However, not all items are located in the Fanzine Research Forums. Some are located in the Wargames Research Forums and TSR Research forums. Please refer to the following legend for navigation.....

*g*. Ouch, no credit, Brette?
I sent you an updated list from Brian's (with permission) a couple of years back with an extra ~75-80+ titles UK-side. Is that included above?
Had moved on since then, but since there wasn't so much as a "thank you" I didn't send any further updates.

Nice!
Did I say 70% complete? haha
A couple of things. The TSR periodicals already have a home in the TSR research forums. We just recently decided to located the wargames periodicals somewhere in the Wargames RF, as an fyi. And finally, it is a bitc.h trying to move around those titles alphabetically. I will add them to a holding area and wait until Ralf can carve out on hour to organize those into the running list, as he is the only php guru on the team. _________________

d.
An interesting idea to be certain. The problem is the enormity of the material. Is it OK, in the time being, to let the list exist alphabetically and wait for the content to fill out? At that time, we will be better equipped to determine exactly where most of the zines were produced. If nothing else, I will certainly endeavor to make a list by geography on the archive side, and unfortunately none of that will happen anytime too soon. I hope you understand. _________________

I argued to do the whole forum by country. Maybe next time . . .
BTW: Given the flexibility of these php programs, it would be possible to create a set archive pages organized by country. Everything would be linked directly to the forum entry. _________________ "This is cool."

Sorry...
List is mostly compiled from Brian origional list plus stuff from all over the place like me, harami, Christophe, and lots of others...
I'd personally like to see all the periodicals in one place, with no split up between the tsr stuff and the rest.. The place thing can be added later.. I'd also like to see that with the rpg stuff as well.. All game companies under the one thing.. ie all the "A"'s under "A" not a couple of main ones under individual ones than subforms under them... just my opinion...
I know I'm missing a lot of foreign ones...

Seems like a sensible compromise to retain that information.
IMHO in terms of hobby development there's a hierarchy of sorts from "global" RPGs at the highest level in which the greatest degree of (published) local development is probably found amongst the "pure" RPG fanzines; amongst which there is a definite clumping on a geographic basis. (Those "global" RPGs which extended beyond a relatively uniform global presence into a localised presence at /that/ level are a phenomenon in their own right and generally towards the early years).
Anyhow; treating as "monolithic" in order to get pics dumped in the first instance isn't such a bad idea.
=
k... I've had a check at Brette's list above, which did include those extras as noted, alongside what's on the main index at present. Rather than taking that up to my current w.i.p. version UK-side (extracted onto Excel with all the 'zine categories/issues/editor/reference/etc. information), I've checkpointed at my last Word version which was a few months down the line from the one I sent to Brette.
Given that, the below are adds/amends with 02c on some choices of naming/abbreviations, skipping a batch in the "dubious" category (as of that time) but not removing the purely postal 'zines which had crept in. A few perzines probably need to go, too... If geographical split is a no-go, at the very least please separate off the non-RPG postal/dipzines since that's a *huge* category which is (afaik) outwith the current team expertise.
By all means, acknowledge http://devel.diplom.org/Postal/Zines/TAP/Encyclo.pdf , http://www.postaldiplomacy.org.uk/encyclopedia.htm , etc., but might be better to "leave it at that" for now. ymmv, of course. :)

I argued to do the whole forum by country. Maybe next time . . .
One of my side projects is still to create a Canadian index of RPG stuff. I figured that I would use the Tome as the source of all the info and just create an index.

Sounds like a good project, Mark. I'm still working on the UK (have been off-and-on the past 20-odd years to the RPG history side).
Good luck. ^^

OK, guys. Thank you for all of the addendum, corrections, etc. I have updated the list and actually placed it in the first post of this thread. I will work from this point and update the Research forums AND Archive side. This will give us a nice platform from which to begin the work of bringing this section to life.
Sorry about the scrolling fingers. That list is HUGE. _________________

The sorting of the zine research forums (RF) is darned near complete. We currently have over 670 titles at the top of this thread! *disclaimer - these numbers and accuracy of the list (including spelling errors!) are subject to the limitations of my beetle brain! So please continue to make any request for additions, corrections, and suggestions within this thread.
Sorting and classifying items at the Tome is not an easy task. There are many disciplines that cross-over one another that make for very fuzzy boundaries of distinction. Wargames periodical are one such item that, are for the most part, easy to distinguish until their creators started to make role playing games! As such, we have elected to locate the pure wargaming zines within the wargames RF, at least until they begin to flesh out a bit better. The thought is that many of those publishers were fully wrapped around their newsletters and magazines. Also, it is easier for the wargaming enthusiast to locate those zines away from the sea of general interest rpg zines. In spite of the organization of the RF, I would like to include wargames titles in this running list within this thread.
I do still need to add some wargames titles to that running list, so it should continue to grow and press past 700 titles in fairly short order. I could use a bit of help in identifying which items are purely wargames for the Research Forums (RF) purposes. Once I add the wargames with content to that list, I will link them back to their respective master forums and locations for ease of use to the fanzine completest.
TSR in-house zines also apply to this sorting distinction. All Dragon, Dungeon, etc. will be located in the TSR master RF. Once content is added there, I will link to it from this location. _________________

Found as many Wargamer zines as I could in the Wargames RF. We are up to 690!
I have also begun to designate Wargame from Fantasy/Sci-Fi from TSR as titles with specific research forum destinations. Each title will get a color designation as per the edit notes in the first post of this thread. Got a ways to go..... _________________

My first thought on this is that it relates to a UK comic strip that was done in serial form in the 80's .. The whole "terran Empire" thing rings a bell.. not sure that it is related to rpg's...
