Scribe's Musings:

The highlight of this issue is Scott Duncan's A History of the IFW. It goes on for a solid 2 plus pages so it is difficult to recreate a lot of it without recreating it. Some of the highlights include....

-January 1966 was when William Speer formed USCAC (United States Continental Army Command) in Malvern, Pennsylvania.
-Scott Duncan joined when W. Speer invited him to after seeing Scott's article in The General magazine.
-March 1966 is when the first issue of The Spartan was produced.
-Issue 2 of Spartan clube zine was in April 1966.
-Issue 3 of Spartan was produced in June 1966.
-Issue 4 of Spartan with 8 pages was produced in September 1966.
-Referred to as the "Mad Lake Genevan", Gary Gygax joins in September 1966. This event is referred to as the club's first big break.
-Issue 5 of Spartan was produced in October 1966. Gary Gygax's first articles appear in the issue. One article is about Armor and the other being a Chess variant called SHOGI: A Japanese variant.
-The December issue of Spartan is described as the first really well done issue. Contains a Midway article and chess variant by Gary Gygax. Also contains the first "Report from Fort Zinderneuf".
-The Spartan goes bi-monthly in 1967 and leaped to 26 pages. The club boast 60 members from coast to coast and has plans for conventions that summer.
-April 1967 is when the USCAC officially become International Federation of Wargamers. The decision to change the name was based on new members in Germany and Puerto Rico. Club membership increases to 100.
-July 15, 1967 is when the IFW held its first dedicated wargames convention in Malvern, PA. It is referred to as in this article as the first such convention ever. It admits there are others devoted to miniatures and chess which might have included some wargames. Disaster nearly struck the IFW when many of the members did not stay for the 'plate purchase' banquet for the convention leaving Bill and Scott stuck with 30 uneaten dinners at a cost of $200. I believe There were no other issues of the Spartan produced until the beginning of 1968 as Scott had to write the membership for financial money to recover. It says that issue of the 'new' Spartan came out in February not January and there was plenty of worry that the IFW wouldn't be able to get it going again.
-Apparently the IFW takes out ads in S&T and the General. Issue #2 of the Spartan is in March 1968. The first two issues were bi-Monthly while switching tentatively to monthly at issue 3.
-IFW successfully hosts 2 more conventions that year. One in NYC and the other in Philadelphia. It claims attendance is weak in NYC.
-Lenard Lakofka and Phil Pritchard join the IFW and usher in a new era for the organization.
-History ends right before my information on Issue #3 of The Spartan. The article states that all of the members at that point pretty well know the happenings during the past year.
