Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay consists of a massive book containing complete rules for combat, character generation, magic & races. Perhaps, more important, is the Old World Campaign setting. This "Grim World of Perilous Adventure" is modelled after a Europe , the default setting being The Empire. Warhammer is a dark world, beset by the forces of Chaos and festering from within by internal corruption, secret worship of forbidden gods & mutations caused by the power of Chaos. Over all hangs a sense of impending doom and a grim realization that Chaos will eventually conquer all its path.
Despite its graphic combat system and detailed rules, the real emphasis in Warhammer is on the character career system and roleplaying. Scenarios, settings and people are detailed to a great degree and character interaction is often secondary to combat. The "Magic Poor" world only further emphasizes the focus on Roleplaying. In demonstration of the importance of the "Roleplay Adventure", the Warhammer RPG was supported by the brilliantly involved Campaign Adventures: The Enemy Within.
However, as Warhammer 40K & Fantasy Battles (and the associated miniatures) continued to escalate in popularity (and therefore: Profit) , progressively less support was provided for the Warhammer RPG system. Eventually, it was licensed to the newly created "daughter" company Flame Publications who followed it up with several new supplements as well as a new adventures in the form of the Doomstones Campaign. In 1991, Flame was dissolved and there were no new Warhammer RPG products until Hogshead Publishing was licensed to produce new (and reprinted) Warhammer material. Hogshead Published until 2002 before leaving behind their involvement with Warhammer. Finally, in 2005 Warhammer resurfaced once again with the newly revised 2nd Edition published by Black Industries and developed by Green Ronin.
