I got this boxed set for Christmas one year (Thanks Ron!) so I know my copy is complete.
There were no plastic stands. Instead all of the important things, people, artifacts were folded and glued to have a triangular base and stand on their own. I seem to remember that they did easily topple over because they were too light.

Thanks Mark. I wasn't sure if they should be present or not.
Ethan's taken to Indiana Jones with gusto, so when he noticed the RPG box sitting on a shelf, he asked to play, and we finally made the time this morning Now I just have to see if I can find some of the modules, since I was sure I had some, but can't (of course!) seem to find them at the moment
I was thinking that stands might give the cardboard figures more ability to stand up, but even then I'm not sure they'd help all that much (well, I guess the weight would help...). Right now we're using his Indiana Jones Lego minifigs for the game (we're walking through the "learn the rules" scenario that's interspersed throughout the rulebook), which is likely much more fun for him, so we'll stick with those.
