The Lankhmar Novels

Fritz Leiber wrote several novels for the world of Nehwon and the main characters Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. In the following you will find a list of his LANKHMAR-related work, including cover scans and the back cover description. Some of the stories date back as far as the late 1940's, when Fritz Leiber created the genre of modern fantasy novels. His style of fast-paced heroic action became more commonly known as Sword and Sorcery.

1968, Ace Books, New York.

"One of them was a huge, brawny, full-bearded barbarian from the northlands of Nehwon. His name was Fafhrd, his weapon a broadsword.
The other was a small, nimble man dressed all in gray. Men called him the Gray Mouser, and he carried both rapier and dirk.
They were known throughout the city of Lankhmar as brawlers, cutpurses, and rogues. But they were the most dangerous fighting-men in Lankhmar, so when the Overlord Glipkerio Kistomerces needed guards for an all-important shipment of gifts to a neighbouring monarch, he chose them for the task. Thus began one of the most fabolous sword-and-sorcery adventures in the famous Fafhrd-Gray Mouser saga—a full-length novel which Ace Books is proud to bring to you as the first in this action-packed new series."

September 1968, Ace Books, New York.

"THE THIRD BOOK OF FAFHRD AND THE GRAY MOUSER

WHEREIN the two greatest swordsmen in Lankhmar try out a new way of life, but give it up in favor of the lore of the sea and an Adept's Gambit.

The lives of adventurers and soldiers-of-fortune often takes strange and hazardous turns, leading them into perilous sea voyages, contests with scheming sorcerers, and encounters with desirable enchantresses.

But no one could have predicted the path that was to take Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser from the back alleys of Lankhmar to weird adventures along the coasts of Nehwon's Inner Sea (and under it!); across harsh deserts and cold mountains, to a tomb with a dreadful secret and the most taxing sword fight in the Gray Mouser's duel-starred life, and the end of the quest for the Castle Called Mist, in the trial of their SWORDS IN THE MIST."

1968, Ace Books, New York.

"HERE IS THE LEGENDARY EPIC OF HOW THE GREATEST HEROES IN THE ANNALS OF FANTASY MET FOR THE FIRST TIME! FAFHRD, THE WHITE-FURRED PRINCELING OF THE BARBARIAN COLD WASTE; THE GRAY MOUSER, A WIZARDLING OF THE WHITEST MAGIC.

LITTLE DID THEY REALIZE, AS THEY SUSPICIOUSLY EYED EACH OTHER ONE NIGHT IN MURKY LANKHMAR, THAT THEY WERE TOW LONG-SUNDERED, MATCHING HALVES OF A GREATER HERO—THAT THEY WOULD BE COMRADES THROUGH A THOUSANDS QUESTS AND A HUNDRED LIFETIMES OF ADVENTURE!"

May 1970, Ace Books, New York.

"IN THE FAR NORTHERN WASTES OF NEHWON STOOD THE UNSCALABLE MOUNTAIN PEAK CALLED STARDOCK. IT WAS SAID THAT ONE COULD FIND DEMONS AND EVIL GODS AT ITS HEIGHTS, AND, OF COURSE, FABOLOUS TREASURE. SO NATURALLY, WHEN FAFHRD AND THE GRAY MOUSER HEARD OF IT...

AND, AS IF ONE SUCH ADVENTURE WERE NOT MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR TWO MORTALS, THE TWO PLEDGE THEMSELVES TO QUESTINGS IN THE TERROR-SHROUDED KINGDOM OF QUARMALL, LAIR OF MAN'S MOST ANCIENT AND EVIL SORCERIES. THERE THEY LEARN THAT, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, IT IS NOT TREASURE THAT LIES AT THE END OF A QUEST, BUT TREACHERY."

1970, Ace Books, New York.

"WHEN FAFHRD THE BARBARIAN AND THE GRAY MOUSER, THE TWO GREATEST ADVENTURERS WHO EVER LIVED—OR EVER WILL LIVE, IN ANY OF THE MANY UNIVERSES—LOSE THEIR FIRST LOVES, THEIR LIVES SEEM FUTILE AND EMPTY... UNTIL THEY SET OUT ON A QUEST THAT TAKES THEM TO UNKNOWN CONTINENTS AND FABOLOUS TREASURE, DEADLY SWORDSMEN AND CUNNING WIZARDS...

...A QUEST IN WHICH THEY ARE REQUIRED TO STEAL: A SKULL, A HOUSE, THE EYE OF AN IDOL—AND THE MASK OF THE GREATEST THIEF OF ALL, DEATH...."

January 1974, Daw Books, New York.

"Author's prospectus:
'There will be over sixty thousand words in all.
'The stories will make up two-thirds of them.
'There will be ten stories, all of them previously un-anthologized, most of them of recent origin.
'All the chief types of story I do will be represented: hard science fiction, Fafhrd-Mouser (sword & sorcery), romantic science fiction, Change War stories, cat stories, Lovecraft-realted stories, supernatural-horror stories.
'The non-fiction will amount to about ten items. They will be of all sorts and closely related to the fiction. There will be book reviews, a pop. science-fiction article in the Asimov vein, my 'Monsters and Monster Lovers,' and so on.
'Stories and articles will alternate in the book, illuminating each other.'

And that's the way it worked out, proving that Anthony Boucher was right when he said, 'Fritz Leiber stands very firmly in the front rank of modern science fiction writers,' and that Lin Carter was correct in saying, 'Fritz Leiber is probably the finest living writer of sword & sorcery."

July 1977, Ace Books, New York.

"Here are the newest and greatest adventures of the two most exciting and imaginative fantasy heroes ever created—Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. Springing from the inventive mind of Fritz Leiber, the five previous books in this series have brought the author awards—including a Nebula—and praise from all over the world.

IN SWORD AND ICE MAGIC , our two indomitable heroes pursue two beautiful maidens (who happen to have money) and find themselves on a quest to the far reaches of Nehwon ... and a confrontation with all manner of gods and warriors, Khahkt, the spider-like warlock of awesome evil, and the deadly Mingol hordes.

SWORD & ICE MAGIC—an entertaining and exciting addition to the epic series that is truly unique in the world of fantasy!"
